Early Life and Career
Before entering politics, the Irish politician served as a farmer and later as a school teacher. In 1961, he was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served until 1965.
Parliamentary Career
From 1965 to 1969, he served as a member of the Irish Senate. In 1973, he was re-elected to the Senate and remained a member until 1982.
Leadership Roles
In 1977, he was elected Chairman of the Irish Senate, a position he held until 1981. During this time, he played a significant role in shaping Senate debates and policies. After serving as Chairman, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Senate from 1981 to 1982.
