Sebastian Coates is a Uruguayan footballer of Spanish-Scottish descent. He plays as a central defender for Sporting and the Uruguayan national team. Coates joined the youth academy of Nacional and quickly rose through the ranks, captaining various youth teams. In January 2009, he signed a professional contract with the club and seamlessly integrated into the first team.

Early Career

Coates is known for his physical attributes, standing at 196 cm tall and weighing 85 kg. He showcased his skills in the 2009 Copa Libertadores, where Nacional reached the semi-finals. Coates played in five matches and even scored a goal. He also participated in half of the matches in the Clausura tournament and eventually became the champion of Uruguay in the 2008/2009 season.

International Recognition

Coates gradually became a key player for Nacional and, by the end of 2009, earned a call-up to the Uruguayan national team. Move to Liverpool

In August 2011, rumors circulated that Coates might transfer to English club Liverpool. On August 25, Coates himself confirmed his intention to join the team and revealed that his national teammate, Luis Suarez, played a role in his decision. On August 30, Liverpool officially announced that Coates had passed his medical, obtained a work permit, and signed a "long-term contract" with the club. On September 18, 2011, Coates made his debut for Liverpool's first team, replacing the injured Daniel Agger in a match against Tottenham Hotspur. On March 21, 2012, he scored his first goal for Liverpool in a match against Queens Park Rangers, executing a bicycle kick within the penalty area.

International Success

Coates represented Uruguay in the 2011 Copa America, playing in four matches and becoming a regular starter by the end of the tournament. He was recognized as the best young player of the tournament.
