Biography of Sammy Davis

Early Life and Career

Sammy Davis Jr. was born on December 8, 1925, in New York City, USA. He came from a family of vaudeville dancers, and at the age of four, he began performing in his uncle Will Mastin's family group. During the Great Depression, the number of performers dwindled down to a trio, with Sammy Davis, his father, and his uncle remaining.

After serving in the army for two years, Sammy Davis returned to performing and his career took off. He began performing in prestigious nightclubs and vaudeville shows.

Acting Career and Setbacks

In 1956, Sammy Davis made his debut on Broadway and in a serious role in the film "The Benny Goodman Story." However, his career was threatened by a car accident in 1954. Despite this setback, he returned to the stage just a few months later.

Throughout his career, Sammy Davis appeared in many films, defying both racial and societal barriers. He faced criticism for his marriage to Swedish actress May Britt, as well as for his religious conversion to Judaism and his shift from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. He titled his autobiography "Yes, I Can."

Later Years and Legacy

Sammy Davis continued to work in film and entertainment, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Some of his notable films include "Robin and the 7 Hoods" (1964), "Sweet Charity" (1968), and "Cannonball Run" (1981). He collaborated with directors such as Bob Fosse, Gordon Douglas, Ken Russell, and Hal Needham.

In May 1990, Sammy Davis passed away from cancer. Despite facing numerous challenges and controversies, he left behind a legacy of immense talent and perseverance.
