Biography of Samuel Colt
Early Life and InventionSamuel Colt, an American engineer, gunsmith, and industrialist, was born on July 19, 1814, in Hartford, Connecticut. At the age of 16, while working as a sailor on the brig "Corvo," Samuel noticed that one of the handles of the ship's helm would engage a clutch and lock the steering wheel after turning. He used a similar mechanism when developing firearms, and as a result, he created the first revolver that automatically rotated the cylinder and locked it in place when the trigger was pulled. The description of this design formed the basis of the patent granted to Colt on February 25, 1836.
Travels and Patents
To raise money for the production of revolver prototypes, the eccentric inventor, known as "Dr. Colt," traveled around the country giving performances with "laughing gas" (nitrous oxide). In 1835, Colt visited Europe and obtained English and French patents for his invention. The following year, he transferred his patent to the "Arms Manufacturing Company" (Paterson, New Jersey), which, however, ceased to exist in 1842 due to conflicts between partners.
Expanding Inventions
In an attempt to raise funds for the revival of revolver production, Colt began experimenting with underwater mines. Within a year, he developed a mine with an electrical detonator, while also improving underwater electrical cables. During the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848, the Texas Rangers and US cavalry soldiers needed "Colt" revolvers, and on January 4, 1847, Colt received his first government order for 1000 revolvers. Since he did not own an arms factory, he entered into a contract with I. Whitney, the son of the inventor of the cotton gin, and when the contract expired, he opened an arms workshop in Hartford, where he began producing new revolver models. In 1852, he received an order for revolvers for naval officers.
Establishing the Colt Company
Having gained financial independence, in the same year, Colt bought the "South Meadows," a marsh near Hartford that flooded every spring. He built dams there and in 1855, he constructed a large firearms factory, which is still the location of the "Colt Company" to this day. At his facility, he introduced progressive measures of social protection for workers, such as building comfortable houses and a recreational center, and striving to minimize manual labor by utilizing various mechanisms. During the Civil War, the Colt company supplied hundreds of thousands of firearms to the government forces. Colt served as an advisor (with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel) to Governor G. Seymour of New York.
Legacy and Death
Samuel Colt passed away in Hartford on January 10, 1862. His contributions to the field of firearms revolutionized the industry and his company, the Colt Company, continues to be a prominent manufacturer of firearms. Colt's inventions and his commitment to social welfare for his workers left a lasting impact on American industry.
