Biography of Sergey Ambarcumyan
Sergey Ambarcumyan was an Armenian public and scientific figure, born in 1942. He graduated from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute named after K. Marx in 1952. He went on to earn a Doctor of Technical Sciences degree in 1952, becoming a professor in 1953 and an academician in 1965. Ambarcumyan was also a corresponding member of the International Academy of Astronautics.
Membership and Honors
Ambarcumyan held numerous memberships and honorary titles throughout his career. He was a member of the International Engineering Academy and an honorary member of the Philosophy Academy of Armenia. He was also a member of the International Academy of Sciences, Education, Industry, and Arts in the United States. In addition, he was an honorary professor at the Peninsula Institute of Informatics and Business and an honorary doctor of the Bratislava University. He was also an honorary professor at the Yerevan Architectural and Construction University. Ambarcumyan held membership in various organizations, including the American Society of Mechanics, the Russian National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and the Society of Mechanics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He was also a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Career
From 1959 to 1977, Ambarcumyan served as the director of the Institute of Mechanics and Mathematics at the Armenian Academy of Sciences. He held the position of academic secretary of the Department of Physical-Technical Sciences and Mathematics from 1971 to 1974. He was a member of the Presidium from 1971 and served as the vice-president from 1974 to 1977. Ambarcumyan later became the rector of the Yerevan State University from 1977 to 1991.
Awards
Throughout his career, Ambarcumyan received numerous awards and honors. He was decorated with the Orders of Lenin, October Revolution, Red Banner of Labor, "Sign of Honor," St. Saak - St. Mesrop, and Jan Amos Comenius. He also received the A.I. Vavilov Medal, "Fighter for Peace," "Friendship," and medals from Yerevan State University and the University of Montpellier. He was honored with the Great Silver and Great Gold Medals of the International Engineering Academy.
