Early Life and Education
Mohammad Beheshti was born on October 24, 1928, in Isfahan, Iran. He pursued his higher education at the University of Tehran and in Qom.
Anti-Shah Activism
In 1960, Beheshti played a prominent role in anti-Shah activities. His involvement led to multiple arrests between 1960 and 1980.
German Sojourn and Marriage
From 1960 to 1965, Beheshti headed the Islamic Center in Hamburg, Germany. During this time, he met his future wife and also made connections with Mohammad Khatami.
Post-Revolution Leadership
Following the Iranian Revolution, Beheshti became the head of Iran's judicial system. He co-led the Islamic Republican Party with Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani to victory in the first Majlis elections.
Presidential Ambition and Withdrawal
Beheshti expressed his intention to run for president. However, he withdrew when Ayatollah Khomeini indicated that he preferred a candidate with a legal rather than theological background.
Assassination
On June 28, 1981, Beheshti and over 70 other Islamic Republican Party members were killed in a terrorist attack by the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization.
