Shelley Moore Capito: Early Life and Education
Shelley Moore Capito was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Duke University in 1975 and a Master of Education from the University of Virginia in 1976.
Early Career
Capito began her career as a career counselor at West Virginia University. She served in the West Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of the state legislature, from 1997 to 2001.
U.S. House of Representatives
In 2001, Capito was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District. She served in the House for seven terms, from 2001 to 2015.
U.S. Senate
In 2015, Capito was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman from West Virginia to serve in the Senate. She is a member of the Republican Party.
Possible Vice Presidential Candidate
Following the election of Donald Trump in 2016, Capito was considered a possible contender for the vice presidency. However, the position eventually went to Mike Pence.
