Musical Lineage and Education

Maria Goossens was born into the renowned Goossens musical dynasty, the daughter of Eugène Goossens and sister to Leon and Eugene Goossens. She pursued her musical education at the Royal College of Music under the tutelage of Miriam Timothy.

Debut and Symphony Orchestra Career

In 1921, Goossens made her debut with her brother Eugene's orchestra, which was formed for the British premiere of Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." That same year, she joined the London Symphony Orchestra, becoming the sole female member.

Pioneering Accomplishments

Goossens became the first harpist to perform on the radio in 1923. In 1936, she made history as the first harpist to appear on television, playing in her husband Hyam Greenbaum's television orchestra.

BBC Symphony Orchestra and Teaching

For five decades, from 1930 to 1980, Goossens played in the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the only remaining musician from the orchestra's original lineup who participated in its 50th anniversary concert. From 1960 to 1989, she held the position of Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Final Performance

Goossens' final public performance took place in September 1991, when she accompanied soprano Gwyneth Jones in a rendition of the beloved Irish ballad "The Last Rose of Summer" at the BBC Proms' annual Last Night gala concert.
