Biography of Siegfried Langer
Siegfried Langer was an Austrian orientalist of Jewish heritage.Early Life and Education
Born in Austria, Langer pursued his education at the University of Vienna from 1879 to 1881. He immersed himself in diverse disciplines, notably studying under the renowned scholar D. G. Müller.
Expedition to the Middle East
In 1881, Langer embarked on an exploratory expedition to the Middle East. He spent six months in As-Sālt and ventured south to the Arabian Peninsula.
Journey and Discoveries
In March 1882, Langer departed from Al Hudaydah to Sana'a and subsequently to Aden. He left Aden on May 20th, venturing into the hinterland. During the expedition, he tirelessly collected 22 South Arabian inscriptions.
Tragic End
Regrettably, in late May or early June, Langer's journey came to an untimely end. He was killed while exploring the region.
Publication of His Findings
Despite his untimely demise, Langer's contributions to the field of orientalism lived on. His mentor, Müller, published his collected inscriptions in the book "Siegfried Langers Reiseberichte aus Syrien und Arabien" (Leipzig, 1883).
