Biography of Simon Stevin
Simon Stevin was a Flemish mathematician, engineer, and universal scholar. Unfortunately, very few details about his life have survived. It is not known for certain when or where he was born, or when and where he died. However, his contributions to mathematics and engineering have left a lasting impact.
Early Life and Career
Simon Stevin began his career as a merchant in Bruges, which is now located in Belgium. He later became involved in the Dutch revolution and participated in various trade expeditions. Stevin eventually became a personal advisor to Prince Maurice of Orange.
Contributions to Mathematics
Stevin is best known for his book "De Thiende" (The Tenth), which was published in Flemish and French in 1585. This book played a crucial role in introducing decimal fractions to Europe. While decimal Indo-Arabic numerals had been used in Europe since the 13th century, fractions were typically expressed in natural numbers, sexagesimal fractions, or scaled to whole numbers. Stevin's treatise provided a practical description of decimal fractions and advocated for their usefulness, particularly in measurement systems and currency.
Stevin also made significant contributions to the understanding of irrational numbers. He challenged the ancient tradition and asserted that irrational numbers were equal in rights to rational numbers. He also introduced fractional exponents, such as 2/3, following the work of Michael Stifel. Additionally, Stevin formulated the rule for vector addition of forces, although it was later expanded upon by Roberval.
Engineering and Other Accomplishments
In addition to his mathematical work, Stevin was an accomplished engineer. Around 1600, he demonstrated his invention of a land yacht with sails on wheels. He used this innovative vehicle to transport Prince Maurice along the coast at a faster speed than a horse.
Stevin's interests were not limited to mathematics and engineering. He wrote treatises on mechanics, geometry, and the theory of music. He also played a role in the development of double-entry bookkeeping, introducing the concepts of debits and credits.
Legacy
Simon Stevin's contributions to mathematics, engineering, and other fields have had a lasting impact. He is credited with popularizing decimal fractions in Europe and challenging traditional views on irrational numbers. Today, his name is commemorated in various ways, including a crater on the moon and a square in the city of Bruges, where a monument to the scholar is located.
