Shin Ui-hyun: Korean Champion and Paralympic Medalist
Early LifeShin Ui-hyun was born in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province. His life took a drastic turn in February 2006 when he lost both his legs in a car accident just a day before graduating college.
Sporting Journey
Initially interested in paracycling, Shin aspired to compete in the Summer Paralympics. However, a suggestion from a friend sparked his interest in skiing. Prior to skiing, he also engaged in sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball.
International Success
Shin's breakthrough came in the 2015/2016 World Cup season, where he earned a bronze medal in the sprint event at Vuokatti, Finland. In 2017, he claimed bronze in the seated 12.5km biathlon at the World Para Nordic Skiing and Biathlon Championships in Finsterau, Germany. Days later, he added a silver medal in the seated 15km cross-country race.
Paralympic Glory
At the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics, Shin was selected as South Korea's flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony. He made history by winning the country's first-ever gold medal in the seated 7.5km cross-country race. Shin also secured a bronze in the seated 15km cross-country event.
