Biography of Sonya Thomas
Sonya Thomas, also known as Lee Sun-kyung, was born on July 27, 1967, in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. She grew up in a poor family and faced difficulties finding work that matched her qualifications. In 1997, she immigrated to the United States and settled in Maryland. There, she found a job as a manager at a Burger King restaurant.
Discovering Competitive Eating
Sonya Thomas later became interested in competitive eating and started participating in speed eating competitions. On September 5, 2010, she achieved her biggest victory by winning the Wing Bowl championship in Buffalo. In just 12 minutes, she consumed 181 chicken wings, breaking the previous world record held by Joey Chestnut.
The Black Widow
Standing at 152 cm tall and weighing 47.5 kg, Sonya Thomas earned the nickname "The Black Widow" because she often defeats male competitors who are much larger than her. She has a remarkable track record in eating competitions, setting records in consuming oysters, cheesecakes, jalapeno peppers, and hard-boiled eggs. Her most famous achievement came on July 4, 2005, when she ate 37 hot dogs in 12 minutes.

Sonya Thomas attributes her recent triumph to her hand speed and technique. She believes that focusing too much on chewing slows down her pace. During competitions, she uses her hands to quickly strip the meat off the wings, relying on her mouth and lips for consumption. Despite her victory, Sonya Thomas admitted that she was still hungry after the competition, considering the wings as merely an appetizer. Just one hour later, she participated in another contest and consumed an additional 20 wings.
