Early Life in Poland and Adoption in Sweden
Stefan Liv was born as Patryk Śliż in Gdynia, Poland. However, his biological parents abandoned him at a young age. When Liv was about two years old, he was adopted by a Swedish family and took on the name Patrik as his middle name.
Hockey Career
HV71 and Sweden National TeamLiv began his hockey career with HV71, where he became the starting goaltender. He made his debut on January 18, 2000, against Luleå. Liv also represented the Swedish national team, including his first appearance against the Czech Republic.
NHL Draft and Detroit Red Wings
In 2000, Liv was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round (102nd overall). He signed a one-year contract with Detroit in 2006 but primarily played for their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Return to Sweden and KHL Career
HV71 and Swedish ChampionshipAfter a season with the Red Wings organization, Liv returned to HV71 in 2007, signing a three-year contract. He led them to the Swedish championship in the 2007/08 season and was named Player of the Year in the Swedish Elite League.
Sibir Novosibirsk
In May 2010, Liv signed with Sibir Novosibirsk in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He helped Sibir reach the playoffs for the first time in many years and was recognized as the team's Most Valuable Player.
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl
Liv later signed a two-year contract with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.Tragic Death and Legacy
On September 7, 2011, Liv and the Lokomotiv team perished in a plane crash during takeoff from the Yaroslavl Airport. He was 31 years old and survived by his wife and two children.
