Biography of Stefan Schnabel

Stefan Schnabel was born in 1912 in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of the renowned classical pianist Artur Schnabel. In 1933, his family left Germany to escape the rising Nazi regime.

Early Career in Theater and Radio

Schnabel's first foray into acting was in theater and radio. He is known to have participated in around 5000 radio broadcasts.

Film and Television Career

In 1943, Schnabel made his debut on the silver screen in the war film-noir "Journey Into Fear." He could also be seen in the 1948 film "The Iron Curtain." During this period, he actively pursued television roles. Some of his early appearances on television included series such as "Kraft Theatre," "Studio One in Hollywood," and "Suspense." In addition to his on-screen work, Schnabel performed extensively on various theater stages, including Broadway. Some of his notable Broadway productions include "Around the World" in 1946, "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" in 1950, "The Love of Four Colonels" in 1953, and "A Very Rich Woman" in 1965. His final Broadway performance was in the play "Social Security" in 1987.

Notable Role in Soap Opera

Schnabel gained popularity with audiences for his portrayal of Dr. Stephen Jackson in the soap opera "The Guiding Light." He played this character for 17 years, from 1965 to 1981.

Later Film Roles and Personal Life

In 1982, Schnabel took on the role of a Soviet communist leader in Clint Eastwood's action film "Firefox." He played his last film role in the 1990 comedy-drama "Green Card," alongside Gerard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell. Throughout his career, Schnabel appeared in approximately 65 films and television movies.

Schnabel was married twice in his lifetime. His first wife was Joan Pittman, whom he married in 1938, and they had one child together. They divorced in 1945, and Schnabel remarried in 1947 to Marion Kohler. He and Marion lived together until his death in 1999. They had two children together. They spent 45 years in Rowayton, Connecticut, before moving to Rogaro, Italy, in 1992.

Stefan Schnabel passed away in Italy on March 11, 1999, at the age of 87. He died of a heart attack.
