Resnick's collaboration with Richard D. Wolff began at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Together, they produced several influential works in the field of class analysis, including articles and books exploring Marxist and non-Marxist theories, various social formations, and radical variations of economic theories. Their joint research is credited with contributing to the development of Louis Althusser and Étienne Balibar's book "Reading Capital." In their work "Knowledge and Class," they presented a nuanced interpretation of the second and third volumes of Marx's "Capital," focusing on the conditions for the existence of different forms of production, appropriation, utilization, and distribution of surplus labor.

Rethinking Marxism

In 1989, Resnick and a group of colleagues and former students launched the "Rethinking Marxism" project. It aimed to provide a platform for reevaluating and reinterpreting Marxist theories and principles in a contemporary context. The project included a scholarly journal, which analyzed not only Marx's economic theories but also his sociological research. Resnick served on the editorial board of the journal until 1994 and later became a member of its advisory board.
