Early Life and Education

Suella Braverman, a British barrister and politician, was born to Kenyan and Mauritian immigrants. Her mother worked as a nurse in the UK's National Health Service for 45 years. Braverman initially attended a state comprehensive school in Brent before receiving a scholarship to a private girls' school in Harrow. She went on to study law at Queens' College, University of Cambridge, where she served as President of the Conservative Association, and completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.

Legal Career

Admitted to the New York State Bar, Braverman practiced as a barrister in the UK for a decade. In 2015, she was elected to the House of Commons as the MP for Fareham, winning 56.1% of the vote (her strongest opponent, UKIP candidate Malcolm Jones, received only 15.4%).

Political Career

Braverman campaigned for the UK to leave the European Union and briefly led the European Research Group, which worked to legislate Brexit through Parliament. She served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Treasury and subsequently to the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, but resigned in November 2018 in protest at the draft Brexit deal proposed by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Reaffirming her position in her constituency, she increased her vote share to 63.7% in the December 2019 general election, with Labour's Matthew Randall coming in second with only 18.1%. On February 13, 2020, Braverman was appointed Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland in Johnson's second cabinet.

Personal Life

Braverman is a member of the London Buddhist Centre, part of the Triratna Buddhist Community, which has faced allegations of sexual abuse.
