Souphanouvong: Statesman and Revolutionary in Laos

Early Life and Education

Souphanouvong was born in 1909 in Luang Prabang, Laos. He received an engineering degree from École Polytechnique in France and played an active role in the anti-colonial movement during this time.

Nationalist and Political Leader

National Army of Lao Issara and United National Front

In 1945, Souphanouvong became the commander of the National Army of Lao Issara, a resistance group fighting against French rule. In 1950, he was elected chairman of the United National Front of Laos (ENF), a political coalition seeking independence.

Patriotic Front of Laos

From 1956, Souphanouvong served as chairman of the Central Committee of the Patriotic Front of Laos (PFL), which aimed to unite leftist and nationalist forces. He played a significant role in establishing the National Liberation Army of Laos and local self-defense forces.

Coalition Governments and the Fight for Independence

Coalition and Resistance

Souphanouvong was appointed deputy prime minister and minister of economy and planning in two coalition governments (1957-1958 and 1962). However, the fighting with internal and external reactionary forces continued.

Peace Agreement and National Reconciliation

Vientiane Agreement

Souphanouvong played a crucial role in the negotiation and signing of the Vientiane Agreement (1973), which restored peace and established national reconciliation in Laos. The agreement led to the withdrawal of US forces and the failure of right-wing attempts to suppress the liberation movement.

National Political Coalition Council

From 1974 to 1975, Souphanouvong headed the National Political Coalition Council, which paved the way for the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR).

Presidency and Later Life

President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic

In December 1975, Souphanouvong became the first president of the LPDR and chairman of its Supreme National Assembly. He remained in these positions until his retirement in 1986.

Membership in the Politburo

Souphanouvong was a member of the Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP), the ruling party of Laos.

Awards and Honors

For his contributions to Laos, Souphanouvong was awarded the Soviet Order of the October Revolution.
