Suret Huseynov: Azerbaijan's Military and Political Leader
Early Life and CareerSuret Huseynov was born on February 12, 1959, in Varvara, Azerbaijan. He graduated from the Azerbaijan Technological Institute as an engineer-technologist. From 1977 to 1979, he served in the Soviet Army.
Rise to Prominence
In 1986, Huseynov became chief controller at a wool factory in Yevlakh. In 1989, he was elected director of the factory, where he implemented significant improvements.
Karabakh War
During the Karabakh conflict, Huseynov emerged as a key figure. He was appointed deputy prime minister and special presidential representative for Karabakh. Under his command, National Army units conducted successful operations in Geranboy and Aghdere. In 1992, he was awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan.
June 4 Rebellion
In 1993, Huseynov led a rebellion against President Abulfaz Elchibey. His forces arrested the general prosecutor and marched on Baku. However, they withdrew after Gейdar Aliyev was appointed chairman of the National Assembly.
Prime Ministership
Following Elchibey's resignation, Aliyev became president and appointed Huseynov as prime minister. In 1994, a political crisis led to Huseynov's resignation and his dismissal as National Hero.
Downfall and Imprisonment
Huseynov fled to Russia but was extradited to Azerbaijan in 1997. In 1999, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for attempted coup d'état.
Release and Later Life
In 2004, Huseynov was pardoned and released. He currently resides in the resort town of Buzovna.
Family
Huseynov's brother, Asif Huseynov, was also accused of coup attempt and sentenced to 13 years in prison. He was pardoned and released in 2008.
