Early Life and Family

Suvakun Imanakunovich Begaliev was born on December 20, 1945, in the village of Balbai, Issik-Kul Oblast, Kyrgyz Republic. He came from a family of rural intellectuals. His father, Imanakun Begalievich Begaliev, was a chief accountant, and his mother, Sokesh Kaikpekovna Kaikpekova, was a biology teacher.

Education and Military Service

Begaliev completed his undergraduate studies at the Moscow State Historical-Archival Institute from 1969 to 1975. He served in the Soviet Army in Brest, Belarus, from 1968 to 1969.

In 1979, Begaliev began his postgraduate studies at the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the USSR of the USSR Academy of Sciences, completing them in 1983. In 1985, he earned his Candidate of Historical Sciences degree from the Leningrad State University with a dissertation on the history of the Soviet workers' and peasants' militia in Kyrgyzstan from 1917 to 1920.
