Formation and Early Success
In 1972, the Belarusian musical group "Syabry" emerged as part of the Gomel Philharmonic Orchestra. Its official foundation is attributed to 1974, and the band adopted its current name in 1973. Valyantsin Badyaraw assumed leadership in 1976, and "Syabry" evolved into a vocal-instrumental ensemble, welcoming musicians Nikolay Padhorny and Vitaliy Chervonny.
In 1977, the band's rendition of Alexandra Pakhmutova's "Hymn to the Earth" earned them recognition as laureates in a Soviet song contest. Their debut album, "To Everyone on the Planet," and the hit song "Kasia" followed in 1978.
"Alesya" and Nationwide Popularity
That same year, composer Oleg Ivanov offered the song "Alesya" to "Syabry." Originally intended for "Pesnyary," the number was rearranged by "Syabry" and debuted on national television in 1978. Its success propelled the band to national prominence and frequent appearances on radio and television, including a dedicated music film titled "You Are My Only Love."
Artistic Leadership and Personnel Changes
In 1981, Anatoly Yarmolenko replaced Badyaraw as artistic director. Badyaraw's departure saw the departure of several other musicians, including Anatoly Hordienok and Vladimir Sharyko. However, the band's popularity remained intact, thanks to songs like "Alesya," which reached the finals of the "Song-81" festival, and "You Rustle, Birch Trees!" by Eduard Khanok.
From 1990 to 2002, renowned actor Vladimir Stankevich joined "Syabry" as a conférencier.
