Early Life and Education

Born in Malaysia, Kassim Ahmad rose to prominence as a leading political figure, academic, and public intellectual. In 1958, he graduated with honors from the University of Malaya in Singapore. Subsequently, he pursued a Master's degree at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur (1972) and a PhD from the London School of Economics (1975).

Academic Career and Political Activism

From 1973 to 1990, Kassim taught at the University of Malaya, rising from lecturer to professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology. His outspoken political views led to his dismissal for supporting the opposition. In 2005, he was invited as a visiting professor by the British Academy.

Kassim's political involvement began as a student leader. He headed the Malay Language Society at the University of Malaya and served as general secretary of the Malay Youth Movement of the Malay Peninsula. He joined the Malaysian People's Party in 1974, becoming its chairman from 1989 to 2003, and later joining the Parti Keadilan Rakyat as vice-president from 2003 to 2010.

Public and International Engagements

Kassim's contributions extended beyond politics and academia. He was the first secretary of the National Union of Malaysian Writers (1961-1964) and served as a consultant for the United Nations University and UNESCO. He participated in international missions, including the investigation into the Thammasat University Massacre (1976) and the Bhopal disaster tribunal (1985). He also chaired the advisory board of the Usman Awang Foundation.

Political Career and Legacy

In 2009, Kassim was elected as a senator representing the Parti Keadilan Rakyat, a position he held until 2015. Throughout his political career, Kassim advocated for social justice and human rights. He authored over 20 books and numerous academic publications that influenced Malaysian politics and intellectual discourse.

Personal Life and Passing

Kassim Ahmad married Sabariah Hj Abdullah, who passed away in 2013. He had three children and two grandchildren. On June 29, 2024, he passed away at the age of 87 at the Selayang Hospital. He was laid to rest at the Muslim Cemetery in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya.
