Tamar Zandberg, a prominent left-wing Israeli politician, has served as a Knesset member since 2013 and as the leader of the Meretz party from 2018 to 2019.

Education and Early Career

Born in Ramat Gan in 1976, Zandberg holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and economics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a master's degree with honors in social psychology from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and a law degree from Tel Aviv University. She is also pursuing a doctorate in political science and management at Ben-Gurion University, specializing in spatial planning and human rights.

Before entering politics, Zandberg taught at the Sapir Academic College in public policy. She also served as the chair of the Welfare Fund for Holocaust Victims from 2010 to 2013 and as the chair of the Ethiopian National Project from 2011 to 2012.

Political Activism and Knesset Career

Zandberg began her political journey in 2003 as a parliamentary aide to MK Ran Cohen of Meretz. In 2008, she was elected to the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipal Council, where she chaired the city's women's commission and served on the finance and affordable housing committees. She advocated for public transportation on Shabbat and campaigned for women's rights, civil marriage, and same-sex marriage.

As a Knesset member, Zandberg has held various positions, including as a member of the Internal Affairs and Environmental Protection Committee, co-chair of the parliamentary lobby for accessible transportation, and chair of the subcommittee on the preservation of Israeli beaches. She has introduced numerous bills, including proposals to mandate the planning of new construction projects in accordance with public transportation routes, tax vacant apartments, ban paid beaches, and decriminalize personal cannabis use.

Party Leadership and Policy Positions

In March 2018, Tamar Zandberg was elected as the leader of Meretz in the party's first-ever open primary. She self-identifies as a feminist, social democrat, and environmentalist. She chairs the "Social Home" opposition faction within Na'amat, Israel's leading women's labor union. Zandberg is also an outspoken advocate for animal protection and outdoor resources.

Zandberg received the Green Globe Award in 2018 for her contributions to environmental protection and sustainable development. She is a vocal critic of police violence, and she supports paid parental leave and policies that promote economic and social equality.
