Chairman of the Supreme Court of North Ossetia
Taimuran K. Aguzarov has held the position of Chairman of the Supreme Court of North Ossetia since 1999.
Early Life and Career
Born in 1963, Aguzarov began his career in the прокуратура (Prosecution Service), eventually becoming Deputy Prosecutor for the Industrial District of Vladikavkaz. In 1995, he was elected as a deputy in the Parliament of North Ossetia from the Alagirian electoral district.
Supreme Court Appointment
By presidential decree of Boris Yeltsin in 1999, Aguzarov was appointed Chairman of the Supreme Court of North Ossetia.
Beslan School Hostage Crisis Trial
Presiding over the TrialIn 2005, Aguzarov presided over the trial of Nurpashi Kulaev, the only captured participant in the Beslan school hostage crisis of 2004. He was responsible for maintaining order in the courtroom, where relatives of the victims often expressed their emotions loudly.
Sentencing
In 2006, the Supreme Court under Aguzarov's leadership sentenced Kulaev to life imprisonment. The prosecution had requested the death penalty, but the court considered Russia's moratorium on capital punishment.
Controversy and Appeals
Aguzarov's handling of the trial faced criticism. Kulaev's lawyer argued that the prosecution failed to prove his client committed murder, while the victims' advocacy group, "Voice of Beslan," claimed the circumstances surrounding the hostages' deaths were not fully investigated.
