Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Tara Margaret Charity MacLean, born on October 25, 1973, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, is the eldest of four children. Her parents were accomplished performer Sharlene MacLean and British Columbia singer-dancer Danny Costain. MacLean's stepfather, guitarist and songwriter Marty Reno, became a significant musical influence.
Discovery and Debut Album
MacLean's talent was discovered while she was singing with friends on a Gulf Islands ferry. In 1995, after relocating to Vancouver, she signed with Nettwerk Records. Her debut album, "Silence," was released in 1995 and produced by Norm Kerner. It sold over 20,000 copies during her two-year promotional tour.
"Passenger" and International Recognition
Tara's second album, "Passenger," was produced by Malcolm Burn and released in 1999. It featured singles like "If I Fall" and "Divided" and helped establish her presence in Canada, the United States, and Asia. She opened for Dido on her first US tour.
Shaye and Personal Life
Collaborating with Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle, MacLean formed the pop group Shaye. Their album "The Bridge" was released in 2003, earning a Juno Award nomination for Best Single ("Happy Baby"). MacLean gave birth to her first child in 2001 and her second in 2006.
Return to Solo Career and "Wake"
In 2007, MacLean left Shaye to focus on her family and solo career. Her third album, "Wake," was released in 2008, coinciding with the birth of her third child. Tara has since continued to perform and release music, blending folk, pop, and Celtic influences.
