Early Life and Education
Nurlаn Mоtuyev, also known as "the Coal King," was born on December 10, 1969, in Chayek village, Kyrgyz SSR (now Zhumgalsky district of Naryn region, Kyrgyzstan). After completing high school, he pursued higher education at Tyumen State University (1987-1994) and the US Diplomatic Academy (1996-1999).
Political Career
During the 2000s, Mоtuyev worked as a correspondent for the newspaper "Asaba" (now "Zhany Agim"). He later embarked on a political career, serving as Deputy Chairman of the People's Patriotic Movement of Kyrgyzstan from 2005 and became the head of the "Zhomart" People's Patriotic Movement. From 2008, he assumed the position of Chairman of the Union of True Muslims of Kyrgyzstan. In 2009, he ran for president in the Kyrgyz presidential election, securing 0.93% of the votes. In 2014, he was nominated for the position of Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan.
Criminal Conviction
On August 29, 2016, Nurlаn Mоtuyev was convicted of public calls for terrorism and inciting inter-ethnic hatred under Articles 226-3 and 299 of the Kyrgyz Criminal Code. He was sentenced to seven years in a strict regime colony, which was later commuted to a prison settlement in 2018.
