Thomas Röper: A German Journalist Embracing Russia
Early Life and EducationThomas Röper was born on November 26, 1971, in Germany. While the exact birthplace is uncertain, it is either Bremen or Schönkirchen. From a young age, Röper exhibited a passion for finance and aspired to become a banker. After completing high school, he pursued a degree in Insurance and Banking at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel.
Insurance Career
Röper's career took off swiftly after graduating in 1994. Despite lacking practical experience, he was appointed to a managerial position at Volksfürsorge. In 1998, he relocated to Saint Petersburg, where he served as Marketing Director for two years at Rus Joint-stock Company. Forced to return to Germany, Röper vowed to one day return to Russia.
After rejoining the German insurance group HDI, Röper oversaw insurance development in Eastern Europe. Concurrently, he held a seat on the board of directors at Hanover COOP Bulgaria and later became a member of the executive board.
Return to Russia and Insurance Success
In 2003, Röper returned to Russia as Deputy General Director of AlfaStrakhovanie Group. His expertise in the Eastern European insurance market proved invaluable, enabling him to enhance the company's efficiency. He specialized in insurance tariff calculations and operational underwriting risk management.
Embracing Journalism and Blogging
After establishing a successful insurance career, Röper sought new challenges. In 2015, he joined a Russian news agency as a contributor. Despite never aspiring to journalistic fame, he delved into political science writing. Röper became a prominent figure in Russian public and political affairs through his columns in various publications.
To expand his audience, Röper launched his own blog, Anti-Spiegel, targeting German-speaking readers. His pro-Russian stance earned him the reputation as a staunch supporter of the Russian authorities. However, critics have accused him of distorting facts and presenting a biased perspective.
Literary Works
Röper has authored several books on politics and sociology. In 2019, he published a biography of Vladimir Putin titled "Vladimir Putin: Seht Ihr, was Ihr angerichtet habt?" (Vladimir Putin: See What You've Done). The book presents Putin's political views through his own statements, claimed to be quoted without omissions or ambiguity.
Personal Life
Thomas Röper maintains a low profile regarding his personal life. While residing in Russia since the early 2000s, it remains unclear whether he has obtained Russian citizenship.
Recent Activities
Röper continues to be actively involved in Russian public affairs. He maintains a YouTube channel and grants interviews to support Russia's actions in Ukraine. He also runs a Telegram channel where he replicates articles published in Anti-Spiegel.
In recent months, Röper has visited a conference on geopolitics between the West and Russia and traveled to the Donbas region to report on the ongoing conflict. In May 2022, he and American journalist John Dugan were featured in a First Channel report exposing information suppression in the West.
