Biography of Tigran Torosyan
Tigran Surenovich Torosyan was born on April 14, 1956, in Yerevan, Armenia. He is currently serving as the Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia.
Early Life and Education
From 1973 to 1978, Torosyan studied at the Faculty of Radio Electronics at Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, where he graduated as an engineer in electronic technology. During the same period, he also studied at the Faculty of Social Professions at the same institute, specializing as a technical translator in French.
Professional Career
From 1978 to 1988, Torosyan worked at the Yerevan Research Institute of Mathematical Machines as an engineer and later as a senior engineer. From 1988 to 1995, he held the position of sector leader and was a leading researcher at the institute. In 1990, he defended his dissertation and obtained a scientific degree in technical sciences. Torosyan has authored 10 inventions and more than 30 scientific papers.
Political Career
In 1995, Torosyan began his career in political research and analysis. He authored the monograph "Post-Soviet Transformation of the Social System." In 2006, he defended his dissertation and received a doctoral degree in political science.
Torosyan's political career started in 1996 when he became a member of the Central Electoral Commission of Armenia. From 1997 to 1998, he served as the chief editor of the official newspaper "Anrapetakan."
On May 30, 1999, Torosyan was elected as a member of the Parliament of Armenia, representing the Unity Block formed by the Republican and People's Parties of Armenia. From 1999 to 2001, he served as the Vice Speaker of the Parliament.
From 2001 to 2003, Torosyan chaired the temporary commission of the parliament on constitutional reform. On May 25, 2003, he was re-elected as a member of the Parliament, this time representing the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).
From 2003 to 2006, Torosyan served as the Vice Speaker of the Parliament and also chaired the temporary commission on integration into European structures. He was the head of the Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
On June 1, 2006, Torosyan was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia. From 2004 to 2007, he was the Vice Chairman of the Group of European Democrats in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Additionally, he served as the Vice Chairman of the monitoring committee for the implementation of recommendations and obligations by the member states of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Torosyan has been a member of the RPA since 1993, and in 2005, he became the Vice Chairman of the party. On June 7, 2007, he was re-elected as the Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia.
He has been honored with the Order "For Services to the Motherland" and the Order of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic "Saint Mesrop Mashtots."
