Early Life and Education

Chris Carter was born in Warwickshire, England, in 1958. He graduated with honors in economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1981.

LGBT Activism in the UK

Carter became the first Executive Director of the Stonewall Lobby Group in the UK. This organization advocated for equal human rights for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Move to New Zealand and Political Career

In 1991, Carter relocated to New Zealand with his partner Jonathan Kirkpatrick. He entered politics, becoming the second openly gay MP in the country's history.

Achievements in Parliament

During his tenure as an MP, Carter made significant contributions to New Zealand's legal framework. He played a key role in the decriminalization of prostitution (2003), making New Zealand the first country to decriminalize the industry. He also championed the Civil Union Act (2004), which extended legal recognition to same-sex partnerships in New Zealand.

Retirement

Carter retired from politics in 2008. His legacy continues to impact New Zealand's social and legal landscape, particularly in the areas of LGBTQ+ rights and sex work policy.
