Early Career and NHL Draft
Tim Gleason, an American ice hockey player, began his playing career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Windsor Spitfires. He spent four successful seasons with the team before being drafted in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.
NHL Career
Gleason's NHL career began with the Los Angeles Kings, who acquired him from the Senators in 2003. After three seasons with the Kings, he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006. In 2008, he signed a four-year, $2.75 million contract with the Hurricanes.
Injuries and Contracts with the Hurricanes
During the 2007-08 season, Gleason suffered a facial injury after being hit by a puck from Alexander Ovechkin. In 2010, he suffered a leg fracture that sidelined him for the remainder of the regular season.
In 2012, Gleason signed a new four-year, $16 million contract with the Hurricanes. After a strong season in which he led the team in hits and ice time, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2014.
Return to the Hurricanes and Trade to the Capitals
In July 2014, Gleason returned to the Hurricanes on a one-year, $1.2 million contract. On February 28, 2015, he was traded to the Washington Capitals for Jack Hillen and a fourth-round pick.
End of NHL Career
Gleason became an unrestricted free agent in July 2015. After a brief stint with the Hurricanes in November, he announced that he was not ready to play in the NHL. In January 2016, he officially retired from professional hockey.
International Career
Gleason represented Team USA at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where he won a silver medal.
