American professional footballer Tim Howard is one of the most famous and successful American footballers today. He has played over 520 matches, won three prestigious titles in English football, received several awards as part of the national team, and earned a dozen personal accolades, ranging from MLS Goalkeeper of the Year to being selected for the English Premier League All-Star team.

Early Life and Career

Tim Howard was born on March 6, 1979, in North Brunswick, New Jersey. When he was three years old, his parents divorced, but his father, a truck driver, remained an active part of Tim's life and that of his brother, Chris. As a sports fan, his father provided them with various sports equipment, from football gear to handballs, believing that his sons would find their passion. Tim became interested in basketball and football, and in junior high, he started playing for a football team. During his teenage years, Tim caught the attention of Tim Mulqueen, an assistant coach for the United States Youth National Team. Although he did not make it onto the team, Tim impressed several other clubs. In high school, he knew many professional players, and a month before graduation, he secured a spot in the North Jersey Imperials team. Interestingly, Mulqueen, who had become his mentor in the world of professional sports, was also working for the North Jersey Imperials at the time and offered Tim a role as the club's goalkeeper.

Professional Career

Thanks to Mulqueen, Tim found a place as a goalkeeper in the MetroStars team, now known as the New York Red Bulls. In 1998, he signed a contract with the New York-based club, and within two seasons of his professional career, he was named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. In 2003, Howard was acquired by the legendary Manchester United in the English Premier League. He was one of the few American players to attract interest from foreign clubs and was fortunate enough to join a team with such a prestigious name. Although he became the second-choice goalkeeper in England, as many expected, it did not hinder him from playing approximately 70 matches and performing well in the most crucial games. In 2007, the English club Everton bought Tim Howard for around £3 million. He had spent the previous season on loan at Everton. Since 2007, Howard has been a part of the team and has appeared in over 340 matches. Notably, he became the fourth goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League to score a goal against the opponent's team while playing for Everton.

National Team and World Cup

Tim Howard has represented the United States national team since 2002. He has played over 100 matches under the national flag, starting in the most important games. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil, Howard emerged as a leader of the team and one of the tournament's best goalkeepers. Despite the team's exit in the round of 16, losing to Belgium, the American team was considered one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. Tim admitted that he wanted to go further and prove to the football world that America is rich in talent. Nevertheless, Howard returned home as one of the most beloved players in the national team.

Off-Field Contributions

Outside of football, Tim Howard has established himself as a highly successful public and political activist. He participates in the charitable program "Athletes in Action," works with various Christian organizations, and serves as a spokesperson for the animal rights organization "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" (PETA). He participated in the charity campaign "Ink, Not Mink," advocating for the ban on wearing animal fur. In the campaign, Howard appeared topless with a beard and showcased all his tattoos.
