Early Life and Education
Timothy Michael Kaine was born on February 26, 1958, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to a welding inspector father. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Missouri in 1979, Kaine pursued a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.
Missionary Work and Legal Career
Before embarking on a legal career with a Richmond law firm, Kaine spent a year working with Catholic missionaries in Honduras.
Political Beginnings and Rise
Kaine's political journey commenced in 1994 with his election to Richmond's City Council. He served as Richmond's Mayor from 1998 to 2000. In 2001, Kaine became Virginia's Lieutenant Governor and also chaired the Virginia Senate. In 2006, he ascended to the position of Governor of Virginia.
Governorship and Notable Events
As Governor, Kaine implemented legislation that virtually banned smoking in restaurants and bars statewide. His governorship also coincided with the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.
Presidential Aspirations and Democratic Leadership
Kaine was an early supporter of Barack Obama during the Democratic primaries. He was considered as a potential running mate for Obama in the 2008 presidential election but ultimately lost the nomination to Joe Biden. Since January 21, 2009, Kaine has served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Senator from Virginia
Kaine was elected to the United States Senate in 2013 as a Senator from Virginia. In 2016, he was the Democratic candidate for Vice President alongside Hillary Clinton but lost the election to Republican candidates Donald Trump and Mike Pence.
