Tobias Hans: A Political Journey

Early Life and Education

Born in Homburg, Saarland, Tobias Hans completed his secondary education at the Christian von Mannlich Gymnasium in 1997. He then performed alternative civilian service at the Psychotherapeutic Clinic Münschwiec in Neunkirchen until 1998.

Hans began studying business informatics, information science, and English at Saarland University in 1998, while continuing to work at the same clinic. However, he discontinued his studies in 2007 without obtaining a degree.

Entry into Politics

From 2006 to 2007, Hans served as a research assistant for the CDU parliamentary group in the Saarland state parliament (Landtag). In 2007, he became a personal assistant to the state minister for justice, labor, health, and social affairs, first under Josef Hecken and then Gerhard Vigener.

Electoral Success

In the 2009 Landtag elections, Hans was elected to the Landtag from the Neunkirchen constituency. He was chosen as leader of the CDU parliamentary group in 2015.

Premiership and Leadership

On March 1, 2018, following Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer's departure to become CDU general secretary, Hans was elected Minister-President of Saarland by a majority of 40 out of 51 votes in the Landtag.

In October 2018, at the Saarland CDU convention, Hans was elected as the party's state chairman with 95.5% of the vote, receiving support from Chancellor Angela Merkel and Kramp-Karrenbauer.
