Early Life and Youth Career
Tom Cleverley was born in Basingstoke, Hampshire, but spent his childhood and youth in Bradford, West Yorkshire. He began his football career at the age of 11, joining the youth academy of Bradford City. In July 2000, he moved to the Manchester United Academy.
Manchester United
Cleverley made his debut for United's first team in a pre-season friendly against Kaizer Chiefs in 2008. He spent the 2008/09 season playing for the reserves but was included in the first-team squad and given the number 35 shirt.
Loans to Leicester City and Watford
In January 2009, Cleverley joined Leicester City on loan until the end of the season. He made his debut against Yeovil Town and scored two goals in 15 appearances. He returned to United in April 2009 due to a shoulder injury but still received a First Division Championship winner's medal for Leicester's league title.
In August 2009, Cleverley moved on loan to Watford. He debuted against Nottingham Forest, scoring a goal in injury time. He extended his loan until the end of the season, making 35 appearances and scoring 11 goals. Cleverley was named Watford's Player of the Season in April 2010.
Wigan Athletic
After returning to United in 2010, Cleverley was loaned out to Wigan Athletic for the 2010/11 season. He debuted against Sunderland and scored his first goal for the Latics against West Ham United. Cleverley remained at Wigan until the end of the season, helping them avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Breakthrough at Manchester United
Cleverley impressed during United's pre-season tour of the United States in 2011 and was named Man of the Match in a friendly against Barcelona. He made his competitive debut for United in the Community Shield, providing an assist for Nani's goal. Cleverley's Premier League debut came against West Bromwich Albion in August 2011.
Injuries hampered Cleverley's progress in the 2011/12 season, but he returned from an ankle injury to score his first goal for United in September 2012 against Newcastle United.
International Career
Cleverley represented England at Under-20 and Under-21 levels. He made his senior debut in 2012 in a friendly against Italy.
