Early Life
Tom Papa was born in Passaic, New Jersey, and raised in Park Ridge and Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, where he graduated from Pascack Hills High School in 1986. He is a graduate of Rider College. He has two daughters, Charlotte Papa and Angelina Papa, and two sisters, one of whom works for the non-profit organization City Green. Papa was known to play football and run track in his youth.
Stand-up Comedy Career
Papa began his career in New York City in 1993, performing at open mics and hosting at the comedy club Stand Up New York. He toured with Jerry Seinfeld after meeting him at the Comedy Cellar in New York. In 2005, he released his debut comedy album, "Calm, Cool, & Collected." His breakout solo show, "Only Human," premiered at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.
Papa has recorded five stand-up specials. "Live in New York" and "Faked Out" were directed by Rob Zombie. His fourth special, "Human Mule," aired on HBO in December 2016. All of his specials are currently streaming on Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix. Papa has made multiple appearances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "The Late Show with David Letterman," and "The Joe Rogan Experience." Papa's popular catchphrase is "Have you ever...? I have!"
Radio
Papa hosts the Sirius XM satellite radio show "Come to Papa," which often features guest hosts from the comedy world. In July 2019, Papa and Fortune Feimster began hosting "What a Joke with Papa and Fortune," which interviews comedians and other celebrities and is the first live show on Sirius XM's Netflix Is a Joke channel.
Papa writes and performs "Come to Papa Live," a monthly installment of the classic radio variety show format, featuring stand-up, music, and sketches. Come to Papa Live alternates between The Village Underground in New York City and Largo in Los Angeles. Past guests on Come to Papa Live have included Matt Damon, Sarah Silverman, Joel McHale, Andy Richter, and Jim Gaffigan.
Television and Film
Papa had a recurring role as Laugh on the HBO and Cinemax series "Nick," starring Clive Owen. He appeared in Chris Rock's film "Top Five" and starred as Ray Arnett alongside Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in "Behind the Candelabra," which aired on HBO on May 26, 2013. It was his second film with director Steven Soderbergh.
Papa co-starred with Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh's 2009 film "The Informant!" He also voiced the title character in Rob Zombie's animated film "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto" and appeared alongside Paul Giamatti in the film. He played himself in "The Comedian" and provided voice work for the animated film "Bee Movie."
In 2010, Papa hosted the NBC game show "The Marriage Ref," which ran for two seasons.
Other television appearances by Papa include "Inside Amy Schumer," "The Jim Gaffigan Show," a recurring role on "The New Adventures of Old Christine," and appearances on FOX's "Boom!" which aired in the summer of 2015, VH1's "I Love the '70s," "I Love the '80s," and "I Love the '90s," and the American version of the British game show "Duck Quacks Don't Echo" on National Geographic.
In 2020, Papa appeared in an hour-long comedy special for Netflix titled "You're Doing Great!" and published a book of the same name.
