Early Life and Education
Jiří Koutník was born into a musical family in the heart of Prague, where his father was a renowned violinist and his mother a gifted pianist. From a tender age, he immersed himself in the world of music.
Musical Journey
Koutník's formal musical training began at the Prague Conservatory, where he excelled in cello. His passion for conducting led him to pursue his studies further at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, graduating in 1977. In the same year, he shared the prestigious first prize at the Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors with Ali Rahbari.
Orchestral Leadership
Koutník's exceptional talent propelled him to the podium of several esteemed orchestras. He served as the musical director of the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bratislava (1979-1981) and the Suk Chamber Orchestra (1981-1983). From 1983 to 1990, he led the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra in Ostrava, followed by the North Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestra in Teplice (1990-1996).
Educational Contributions
Alongside his orchestral responsibilities, Koutník has dedicated himself to nurturing young musicians. Since 1994, he has been a professor at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, passing on his knowledge and experience to future generations of conductors.
Notable Recordings
Koutník's artistic legacy includes a remarkable recording cycle of all Franz Schubert's symphonies with the North Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestra. This comprehensive project commemorated the 200th anniversary of Schubert's birth.
