Early Life and Education
Tommy Tuberville was born and raised in Camden, Arkansas, the son of Olive Chambliss and Charles Tuberville Jr. He graduated from Harmony Grove High School in 1972. Tuberville attended Southern Arkansas University, where he played football and golf for two years. He was inducted into the Southern Arkansas University Sports Hall of Fame and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
Coaching Career
University of Mississippi (1995-1998)Tuberville coached the University of Mississippi from 1995 to 1998. During his tenure, he led the team to consecutive bowl appearances and successfully convinced fans to stop flying the Confederate flag at home games.
Auburn University (1999-2008)
In 1998, Tuberville left Mississippi to become head coach at Auburn University. He led the Tigers to several top-10 finishes, an SEC Championship (2004), and a Western Division title. Under his guidance, Auburn achieved its largest ever margin of victory over rival Alabama (7-3). He left Auburn in 2009 and went on to work as an analyst for "Buster Sports" and ESPN.
Texas Tech University (2010-2012)
Tuberville was hired as head coach of Texas Tech University in 2010. He received a one-year contract extension and a $500,000 annual raise in 2011. However, he resigned from Texas Tech in 2012 amid reported fan disapproval and the perception that a previous coach was more popular.
University of Cincinnati (2013-2016)
Tuberville became head coach at the University of Cincinnati in 2012, signing a contract worth $2.2 million. He resigned from Cincinnati in 2016.
U.S. Senator
In 2020, Tuberville ran for the U.S. Senate in Alabama. He won the Republican primary after a runoff election against Jeff Sessions. In the general election, he defeated incumbent Democrat Doug Jones by a margin of 60.1% to 39.9%.
Tuberville took office in January 2021 and joined a group of Republican senators who objected to counting electoral votes from disputed states where Joe Biden narrowly won. He voted in support of objections to the electors from Arizona and Pennsylvania.
Personal Life
Tuberville married Vicki Lynn Harris on December 19, 1976. They later divorced. In 1991, he married Suzanna Fette of Guilford, Indiana. They have two sons.
