Tonje Brenna: Norway's Minister of Education
Tonje Brenna, a prominent Norwegian politician from the Labour Party, has been serving as the Minister of Education since October 14, 2021. Her political journey has been marked by both triumph and adversity.
Early Life and Political Ascent
Born on October 21, 1987, Brenna joined the Labour Party's youth wing, AUF, in 2005. Two years later, she was hired as a political advisor for AUF. After a stint as the youth secretary for the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) in Oslo and Akershus, she was elected Secretary-General of AUF in October 2010.
Surviving the Utøya Terror Attack
Brenna's life took a dramatic turn on July 22, 2011, when she survived the terrorist attack on the island of Utøya. Together with a bleeding Tonje Brenna, she hid behind a rock outcropping near the lake. In 2012, Tonje Brenna testified in the trial against terrorist Anders Breivik.
Government Service and Election to Governor
Brenna's resilience and determination inspired her to continue her political career. In the summer of 2012, she became the youngest political advisor in the Prime Minister's Office in Stoltenberg's second government. In 2013, she joined the Ministry of Justice and Public Security under Minister Grete Faremo. After the Labour Party's defeat in the 2013 parliamentary elections, she left the government. Following the 2019 local elections, Brenna was elected Governor of Viken County.
Appointment as Minister of Education
On October 14, 2021, Brenna was appointed Minister of Education in the Støre government. She brings her passion for education and her unwavering commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for all students to her role.
Personal Life
Brenna resides in Jessheim with her partner, jazz musician Vetle Larsen. The couple has two children: Emil (born 2014) and Oskar (born July 18, 2019). In her free time, she enjoys running, indulging in beer, and immersing herself in detective novels.
