Currently, he is a permanent member of the bands King Crimson and Liquid Tension Experiment. Known for his innovative spirit, Levin played a significant role in popularizing the stick and electric upright bass. He also invented "funk fingers," which simulate the sound of drumsticks hitting the bass guitar strings.

Levin is widely recognized as a prominent bass guitarist, with his most famous bassline being in Peter Gabriel's song "Sledgehammer." However, many fans consider his peak career moment to be his involvement in King Crimson.

In addition to his contributions to other projects, Levin has released several solo albums and one live album with his own band, the Tony Levin Band.

In 2020, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 42nd on their list of the 50 greatest bassists of all time.
