Thorbjörn Fälldin: A Politician of Integrity
Early Life and CareerThorbjörn Fälldin was born in 1926 into a farming family in Ångermanland, Sweden. In 1956, he purchased a small farm, but faced resistance from agricultural authorities who deemed the property too small and neglected. This adversity sparked Fälldin's entry into politics.
Leadership of the Centre Party
Fälldin joined the Bondeförbundet, which became the Centre Party in 1958. In 1971, he became its leader, succeeding Gunnar Hedlund. His attempt to merge the party with the Liberal People's Party in 1973 failed to gain sufficient support.
Premiership (1976-1982)
In 1976, Fälldin made history by becoming the first non-Social Democrat Prime Minister in four decades. He formed a coalition government with the Liberal People's Party and the Moderate Party. However, the coalition dissolved in 1978 due to disagreements over nuclear power, prompting Fälldin's resignation.
After the 1979 elections, Fälldin again became Prime Minister, leading a government that included the Centre Party, the Liberal People's Party, and the Moderate Party. This cabinet also lasted for approximately two years before the Moderate Party withdrew due to tax policy disputes. Fälldin remained in office until the 1982 elections, when the Social Democrats regained parliamentary majority.
A Respected Figure
Throughout his 27-year political career, Fälldin earned widespread respect for his honesty, humility, and willingness to listen to diverse perspectives. As Prime Minister, he navigated the challenges of coordinating three disparate parties and facing a parliament still dominated by the defeated Social Democrats.
Unassuming Lifestyle
Fälldin resisted the trappings of government life. He lived in a modest apartment in central Stockholm during his years as Prime Minister, while his family remained on their farm in northern Sweden. He prepared his own breakfast, took out the trash, and walked the 15-minute route to his office. His only concession to security was an unmarked police car that trailed him.
Retirement and Legacy
After leaving politics in 1985, Fälldin returned to his farm. Revered across the political spectrum, he left a legacy of integrity, pragmatism, and a commitment to rural values.
