Early Life and Naval Career
As a Greek politician, Ioannis Tzannatakis served as Prime Minister of Greece in 1989. His early career began in the maritime industry. After graduating from the Hellenic Naval Academy, he served as a naval officer aboard the gunboat "Lakos" and later as commander of a submarine.
Opposition to the "Black Colonels"
Following the military coup led by Georgios Papadopoulos in 1967, Tzannatakis resigned from military service as a protest against the junta known as the "Black Colonels." He faced imprisonment in 1969 and 1971 and spent time in exile.
Political Career
After the fall of the military regime in 1974, Tzannatakis joined the New Democracy party. He served as General Secretary of the Greek National Tourism Organization from 1974 to 1977. Elected to the Greek Parliament from 1977 to 2007, he held various leadership positions within New Democracy, including leading party campaigns in 1989, 1993, and 1996.
Ministerial Positions
Tzannatakis's ministerial career included stints as Minister of Public Works (1980-1981), Prime Minister (July-October 1989), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1989), Minister of Tourism (1989), Minister of Defense (1989-1990), Deputy Prime Minister (1990-1993), and Minister of Culture (1990-1991).
Later Years
As Minister of Culture, Tzannatakis supported the establishment of the International Delphic Games. He passed away in Athens in 2010.
