Early Life and Career
Ulrike Ulrike Kunze was born on January 6th, 1960, in Dresden, East Germany (Zodiac sign: Capricorn). After finishing school, she pursued a career in bookselling. However, in 1978, she successfully auditioned for the renowned Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. She graduated three years later and wasted no time honing her skills on the stage.
Theater and Film Debut
Ulrike Mai began her theatrical career in the mid-1980s, performing with the Magdeburg Theater and later the Halle Theater. In 1987, she joined the GDR's state television channel. Following her marriage to actor Jürgen Mai, she adopted his surname, which she has used ever since. In addition to acting, Mai also lent her voice to foreign film and television series dubbing.
Her breakthrough role came in 1980 when she was cast as Anna Mons in the Soviet-German historical epic "Peter the Great." The film series, an adaptation of Aleksey Tolstoy's novel, became a massive success in the Soviet Union. Despite receiving mixed reviews abroad, the film earned Mai instant recognition among audiences.
Television Roles and Later Career
In subsequent years, Mai primarily focused on television roles in German series. Among her notable appearances was the 2005 telenovela "Love in Berlin," a remake of the Colombian series "Yo soy Betty la fea." From 2000 onwards, Mai graced the stage at Dresden's Comedy Theater, performing in productions such as "Haus in Montevideo" and "Die süße Glocke."
One of her last major projects was a five-part fairy tale play featuring Baba Yaga, which premiered in 2016. Two years later, Mai announced her retirement from acting.
Personal Life
Since the late 1980s, Ulrike Mai has been married to actor and director Jürgen Mai. The couple resides in Müggelheim, a suburb of Berlin.
Legacy and Recent Accolades
In 2022, Russia commemorated the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great's birth. As part of the celebrations, several cinemas in Russia re-released the Soviet-German film "Peter the Great," in which Mai played the unforgettable role of Anna Mons.
