Biography of Karin Powser-Kaberta
Early Life and CareerKarin Powser-Kaberta is a German politician and civil servant known for her staunch opposition to Scientology. In 1992, she became head of the Working Group on Scientology within the Hamburg Ministry of the Interior, a position she held until 2010. She remained an employee of the Ministry until 2013.
Activism Against Scientology
Kaberta has been actively involved in the anti-Scientology movement since the mid-1990s. In 1995, she played a prominent role in the controversy surrounding Scientology's presence in schools in Bjerndrup, near the German border.
In 1996, Kaberta told The New York Times that she saw parallels between Germany's history during the Third Reich and the Church of Scientology. She expressed concerns that Scientology aimed to undermine German democracy with its "cynical ideology."
Political Campaign
In August 2007, Kaberta and Hamburg Interior Minister Udo Nagel called for the Scientology organization to be banned in Germany. However, this proposal was rejected by federal politicians in Berlin. Wolfgang Bosbach, a conservative MP in Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition, said that outlawing Scientology was unlikely to succeed as the German domestic intelligence service was unlikely to gather sufficient evidence to justify a court ban.
Criticism of Tom Cruise
In 2007, Kaberta publicly labeled actor Tom Cruise an "enemy of the constitution." She criticized Cruise for his support of Scientology and accused him of promoting its anti-democratic agenda.
