Early Life and Career

Val Demings was born in Jacksonville, Florida, as one of seven children to a mother who worked as a maid and a father who was a janitor. She became the first in her family to graduate from college and initially worked as a social worker before joining the Orlando Police Department in 1983.

Ascent through the Ranks

Demings rose through the ranks of the Orlando Police Department, serving for 27 years and becoming its Chief in 2007. Her accomplishments included implementing community policing initiatives and leading the department through a period of significant growth.

Political Ambitions

In 2012, Demings unsuccessfully ran for the US House of Representatives. However, she gained momentum in 2016 when she won the Democratic primary with a commanding 57% of the vote, defeating several prominent rivals, including State Senator Geraldine Thompson.

Congressional Tenure

Since 2017, Demings has represented Florida's 10th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. In the 2018 election, the race was effectively decided in the Democratic primary, as no Republican or other third-party candidates filed for election.

Notable Roles

In January 2020, Demings served as a House impeachment manager in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. She was also considered as a potential vice-presidential running mate for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Personal Life

Demings is married to Jerry Demings, a retired police officer who became the first African American sheriff of Orange County in 1998 and later mayor. The couple has three children and five grandchildren.
