Birth and Early Life
Valentin Alexeyevich Zaitsev was born on September 28, 1922 in Kostroma, Russia, to working-class parents. After attending secondary school, he studied at the Kostroma Textile Technical School but only completed two years of the program.
Military Career
In 1941, Zaitsev was drafted into the Red Army and sent to the Krasnodar Military Aviation School of Pilots, graduating in 1942. From November 1942 onwards, he served in the 828th Assault Aviation Regiment of the 260th Assault Aviation Division on the Karelian Front.
Zaitsev fought on the Kandalaksha and Murmansk sectors, participating in numerous offensive operations, including the Petrozavodsk-Svir and Petsamo-Kirkenes operations. Later in the war, he fought on the 2nd Belorussian Front in Poland and Germany.
By April 1945, Zaitsev had flown 103 combat missions, targeting enemy forces, airfields, ports, and strategic objectives.
Hero of the Soviet Union
On August 18, 1945, for his bravery and success in numerous combat missions against Nazi Germany, Zaitsev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, receiving the Order of Lenin and the "Golden Star" medal.
Post-War Life
Zaitsev continued to serve in the Soviet Air Force until 1948. After retiring, he settled in Krasnodar, working as a dispatcher for the Krasnodar Footwear Factory. He passed away in 1986 at the age of 63.

A memorial plaque has been installed on the house where Zaitsev was born and raised. He received the following awards:
