Early Life and Education
Valentine Yuryevich Pasatwas born on July 13, 1958, in the village of Scumpia, Moldavian SSR. He graduated from the historical faculty of Kishinev State University and served in the Soviet Armed Forces for two years.
Academic Career
Postgraduate Studies and Academia:Pasat was an aspirant at the Institute of History of the USSR at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1984 to 1988. He then worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Political Studies of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova from 1988 to 1992.
Doctoral Degree and Diplomatic Studies:Pasat completed a doctorate at the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Diplomatic Service
Ambassadorship in Russia:In August 1994, Pasat became the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Moldova to Russia. He held various positions at the Moldovan embassy in Russia from 1992 to 1994.
Ministerial Posts
Minister of Defense:Pasat returned to Moldova in January 1997 and became the head of the country's Ministry of Defense.
Minister of National Security and Director of the Intelligence Service:On May 12, 1999, Pasat was appointed Minister of National Security of Moldova. The ministry was later reorganized into the Information and Security Service, and Pasat became its director in January 2000.
Resignation and Return to Academia
Dismissal from the Intelligence Service:Pasat was dismissed from his position at the Intelligence Service on December 21, 2001.
Academic Post at Moldova's Academy of Sciences:Pasat joined the Institute of History of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences in 2002, where he had been elected a corresponding member in 2000.
Appointment as Advisor to RAO EES Russia
Advisorship:On February 19, 2004, Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the Board of RAO EES Russia, appointed Pasat as his advisor on international economic relations.
Political Activities and Arrest
Support for Opposition in Moldova:Pasat supported opposition candidates in the 2005 parliamentary election campaign in Moldova.
Arrest and Conviction:He was arrested at the Chisinau airport on March 11, 2005, accused of selling Moldovan military equipment at undervalued prices. In January 2006, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, later reduced to 5 years in October 2006. Pasat was amnestied and released in July 2007.
Literary Works and Personal Life
Authorship:Pasat is the author of the book "Difficult Pages in the History of Moldova: 1940-1950."
Personal:Pasat is married to Liliya Garciu, with whom he has a daughter named Valeriya (Viorica), born in 2000.
Awards and Honors
Order of Friendship (Russia):Pasat was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship in 1997.
