Basil I, Founder of the Macedonian Dynasty
Basil I, born of Macedonian (or Thracian) peasant stock, ascended to the throne in 867 CE, establishing the Macedonian dynasty. He rose to prominence at the court of Emperor Michael III, becoming his co-emperor in 866. After Michael's assassination in 867, Basil seized the throne.
Centralization and Religious Reforms
Basil I pursued policies aimed at strengthening the centralized state. He crushed the Paulician movement and initiated the reception of Roman law, issuing the Prochiron (870-879) and preparing the Epanagoge.
Foreign Policy and Alliances
Basil I engaged in conflicts with the Arabs in the East and in Italy. He sought alliances with Emperor Louis II and the papacy. In 868, Photios was deposed as patriarch, and Ignatius, a supporter of closer ties with Rome, was reinstated.
Recognition of Armenia
In 886, Basil I recognized the independence of the Armenian state.Foiled Conspiracy
Around 883-885, a plot by feudal nobles against Basil I was uncovered. Photios was implicated in the conspiracy, leading to his downfall.
