Vasily Abramovich Divov: A Decembrist's Fate

Early Life and Family

Vasily Abramovich Divov was born in 1805 to Abram Gavrilovich Divov, an advisor to the Kazanskaya Chamber of Criminal Justice, and his mother, Agrafena Borisovna. He lost his father at a young age in 1805.

Naval Career

Divov entered the Maritime Cadet Corps in 1816 and served as a gardemarine from 1818 and a midshipman from 1821. In 1823, he joined the Guards Crew and participated in several voyages in the Baltic Sea.

Involvement in the Decembrist Movement

Divov became a member of the secret "Society of the Guards Crew" and participated in the uprising on Senate Square on December 14, 1825.

Arrest and Imprisonment

After the failed uprising, Divov was arrested on December 15, 1825, and imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress. He was initially sentenced to eternal hard labor but later had his sentence reduced to 20 years.

Transfer to Siberia and Military Service

In 1827, Divov was secretly transferred to the Bобruisk fortress, where he was held in solitary confinement for several years. In 1839, he was released from hard labor and ordered to serve as a private in the 2nd Black Sea Linear Battalion.

Later Life and Death

During his military service in the Caucasus, Divov was wounded in a clash with mountaineers. He later died of his wounds and illness in 1842.

Legacy

Some researchers believe that Divov suffered from a mental disorder while imprisoned and may have falsely implicated himself during the investigation. Despite his tragic end, Vasily Abramovich Divov remains a significant figure in the history of the Decembrist movement.
