Early Life and Education

Born into a farming family, Ukrainian politician Vasyl Durdynets graduated from the law faculty of Ivan Franko Lviv State University in 1960.

Career in Government and Law Enforcement

Durdynets began his career in 1958 in youth organizations before rising through the ranks of party and government bodies in Lviv, Moscow, and Kyiv. In 1978, he became Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, later becoming First Deputy Minister from 1982 to 1991.

Political Appointments

In 1990, Durdynets was elected as a People's Deputy of Ukraine. He served as First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada from 1992 and went on to hold various ministerial positions, including Vice Prime Minister for State Security and Emergencies (1995), First Vice Prime Minister (1996), and Head of the Coordinating Committee for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime (1997).

Prime Minister and National Security

Appointed as Acting Prime Minister of Ukraine on July 2, 1997, Durdynets also became Director of the National Bureau of Investigations and a member of the National Security and Defense Council.

Minister of Emergencies and International Representation

From 1999 to 2003, Durdynets served as Minister for Emergencies and Protection from Chernobyl Consequences. He also represented Ukraine in international organizations, including the Partial Open Agreement of the Council of Europe.

Military Rank, Awards, and Honors

Durdynets attained the rank of General of Internal Service of Ukraine in 1997. He received numerous awards, including the Orders of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (V and IV degrees), Order of Merit (III degree), Order of the Red Banner of Labour, Order of Personal Courage, and Order of the Badge of Honour. Additionally, he was named a Merited Border Guard of Ukraine, Merited Worker of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Honorary Professor of the National Academy of Internal Affairs.
