Early Life and Education

Vasyl Dzharty was born in Makiivka, Ukrainian SSR, on January 2, 1957. He is of Greek descent.

In 1981, he graduated from Donetsk Polytechnic Institute as an engineer-mechanic in automobiles and automotive engineering. In 2000, he earned a Master's degree in public administration from Donetsk State Technical University.

Career in Politics

Local Politics and Regional Government

Dzharty's political career began in the late 1990s. He served as chairman of the Gornyak cooperative (1988-1990) and director of various private enterprises in Makiivka (1990-1999).

In 1999, he became deputy chairman of the Gornyatsky District Council and deputy chairman of the Makiivka City Council (1999-2000). In 2000, he was elected Mayor of Makiivka, a position he held until 2002.

National Politics

Dzharty entered national politics in 2002 when he was appointed First Deputy Chairman of the Donetsk Oblast State Administration. He served in this role until 2005.

From 2006 to 2010, Dzharty was a People's Deputy of Ukraine. He served as First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Ecological Policy, Nature Utilization, and Chernobyl Disaster Liquidation (2006-2010).

Minister of Environmental Protection and Prime Minister of Crimea

In 2006, Dzharty was appointed Minister of Environmental Protection of Ukraine, a position he held until 2007.

In March 2010, Dzharty was elected Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Crimea. He led the Party of Regions' electoral list in the 2010 Crimean Supreme Council elections.

Family and Social Activities

Dzharty was married to Natalia, a homemaker. He had two daughters, Viktoria and Olga.

He was a member of the Party of Regions and served as its deputy chairman. From April 2010 to August 2011, he was chairman of the Crimean Republican Organization of the Party of Regions.

Controversies

Dzharty has been accused of being involved in organized crime in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Former Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Yuriy Lutsenko claimed that Dzharty led a criminal group known as the "Makeevskaya" and was nicknamed "Vasya Bita" for using a baseball bat in racketeering.

Death

Dzharty died on the night of August 16-17, 2011, at the Glytsinia resort in Crimea where he was undergoing rehabilitation after surgery. An anonymous source close to Dzharty alleged that Ukrainian doctors had misdiagnosed his condition, and subsequent treatment in Germany and Russia was unsuccessful due to the delay.
