Early Life and Education
Василий Князевwas born into a wealthy merchant family in Russia and окончил гимназию in Yekaterinburg. In 1904-1905, he attended a teacher's seminary in St. Petersburg but was expelled for his political activities.
Revolutionary Career
After the Bolshevik Revolution, Князев joined the Red Army as an agitator. He contributed to the "Krasnaya Gazeta" under various pseudonyms, such as "Krasny Zvonar" and "Krasny Poiet."
Post-Revolution Writing
Following the introduction of the New Economic Policy, Князев's focus shifted away from political satire. He published collections of folk songs, including частушки (folk couplets), and compiled a book of Russian proverbs.
Repression and Rehabilitation
Князев was arrested and died on a prison transport to Magadan. He was posthumously реабилитирован in 1957.
Literary Style
Князев's poetry was influenced by Demyan Bedny and characterized by its aggressive calls for the destruction of the enemy. It occupied a unique position in revolutionary poetry, blending traditional folklore with political fervor.
Recognition
Wolfgang Kasack praised Князев's skill and aggression, noting that his verses carried a "proletarian pathos" and reflected the influence of internationalism.
